Liana, as Rosie knows her
Liana reads French novels in translation with a pencil in hand, and her paperbacks are soft with underlining. It suits her gentle, graceful manner. Slim at 167 cm, with chestnut brown hair that hangs long and straight and brown eyes quick to notice when something is troubling you, she dresses with a classic romantic touch: fine knits, a silk blouse, pearls when the occasion earns them.
Her great gift is intuition. Somewhere in her late twenties she learned to sense what kind of evening a person needs before they have said a word, and she still does it quietly, without fuss. She speaks English softly and thoughtfully and enjoys conversations that drift from books to gardens to the small absurdities of daily life. Pilates keeps her posture beautiful, and her balcony, so crowded with herbs and climbing roses that the door barely opens, receives the kind of devotion other people reserve for their children.
One of her favourite corners of this part of London is John Sandoe Books on Blacklands Terrace, tucked behind Sloane Square, a crooked old bookshop where the stacks lean and the staff always know the right recommendation. She likes to buy you a novel before dinner and write a line inside the front cover. Supper nearby follows, then a quiet walk towards Belgravia beneath the street lamps.
