Vanessa, as Rosie knows her
Vanessa keeps a small notebook of untranslatable words, and if you ask nicely she will read you three of them. It tells you something about her curious, gentle nature. Slim and 173 cm, with hazel eyes and a long fall of sandy brown hair, softly balayaged, she dresses in an understated coastal way: breton stripes and a camel coat with white trainers by day, plain silk by night.
Sweet, curious and wonderfully relaxed, Vanessa always seems to have all the time in the world. Now in her mid twenties, she asks a great many questions in her gentle English and listens closely to every answer, which makes people tell her far more than they intended. Learning languages is a lifelong hobby; fragrance is her small luxury, a row of travel-sized bottles each tied to a memory; and cycling through the parks is her favourite way to see London.
Around Hyde Park she loves The Dorchester on Park Lane, especially the long, gilded Promenade, where the late afternoon light pours in and the whole room feels timeless. She might suggest a late tea or an early drink there, followed by a stroll into the park as the lamps come on and the traffic noise falls away behind the trees. She will almost certainly teach you a word on the way.

Vanessa's evenings are unhurried and full of small discoveries. She likes to meet in daylight if she can, perhaps for tea on Park Lane, and she will have a new word to share, something lovely from another language that names a feeling English has never bothered to. Then a walk through the park, past the Serpentine and under the trees, while she asks where you grew up and what you miss about it. Dinner is simple and good, and she lets you choose. As the evening goes on she turns playful, testing whether you can guess which memory each of her scents belongs to. When the night ends she has taught you a new word and left you wanting to use it.
