Chelsea Bridge is where SW1 meets the river and then crosses it. On the north bank, Grosvenor Road heads east towards Pimlico and the Chelsea Embankment west past the gardens of the Royal Hospital; on the south, Battersea Park and the restored Power Station have turned a long overlooked stretch into one of the most talked about corners of London. Apartments line both banks, and many of our bookings here go to their doors rather than to a hotel.

A suspension bridge and two riverbanks
The present bridge opened in 1937, a slender suspension span that looks its best after dark, when its lamps shiver in the water below. Downstream, the four white chimneys of Battersea Power Station stand over the new streets of Electric Boulevard, with shops and restaurants inside the old turbine halls and a glass lift that climbs the inside of one chimney. Upstream, Battersea Park runs along the south bank with its Peace Pagoda and boating lake, and on the north bank the Royal Hospital, home of the Chelsea Pensioners, hosts the Flower Show every May.
It is a district made for evenings outdoors: a walk across the bridge at sunset, a drink on a terrace facing the water, the river bus pulling in at the Power Station pier. Residents of the riverside developments on both banks write to Rosie often, and so do guests of the new hotel in the Power Station quarter. People on long work stays and residents entertaining at home make up most of the rest.

art'otel London Battersea Power Station, SW11 8BJ, is the newest, on Electric Boulevard, with art on every floor and a rooftop pool bar that looks back across the river to SW1. North of the bridge and a few minutes inland, Artist Residence London, SW1V 4QQ, is a small, individual hotel in Pimlico, and Park Plaza Victoria London, SW1V 1EQ, a larger one on Vauxhall Bridge Road. Further west, over the Chelsea border, a peaceful townhouse on Cadogan Gardens: The Draycott Hotel, SW3 2RP.
Most bookings here, though, go to apartments: the towers of Chelsea Bridge Wharf, the new buildings of the Power Station, the mansion blocks on Grosvenor Road and the homes on the former Chelsea Barracks site. Concierge desks are normal in all of them, and your companion is equally happy to be sent up or to wait by the lifts until you appear; tell Rosie which.

A Friday in July. A resident of Chelsea Bridge Wharf writes at four: three hours from seven, £1,050. Michelle arrives on the hour, and they walk along the river to the Power Station, ride the glass lift up the chimney for the view back over SW1, and take a table in the turbine hall as the lights come on. The walk home along the water takes ten minutes, and there is just time for one of her invented cocktails before a car collects her at ten.
Stations, the bridge and the minutes
Battersea Park station, with National Rail trains into Victoria, is about 6 minutes from the southern end of the bridge. Battersea Power Station, the Northern line terminus that opened in 2021, is roughly 8 minutes' walk. On the north bank, Sloane Square, on the Circle and District, lies around 13 minutes up Lower Sloane Street.
The bridge makes this one of the easier journeys in town. Your companion comes by car from Pimlico, Chelsea or Belgravia in minutes, both banks lie inside the first two zones, and so the crossing never adds to the rate. After Rosie confirms, expect her within the hour. On summer evenings when the Power Station hosts a big event the approach roads slow a little; name a fixed time on those nights and she will keep to it.
Rosie takes the building, the flat and your surname once, or the hotel and your room, and asks nothing of the concierge. What you owe goes to your companion herself when she arrives, the amount agreed in writing.
