Michelle, as Rosie knows her
Michelle has three rules for a first drink: sit where you can see the door, order something you could never make at home, and ask the other person a question before talking about yourself. She keeps all three with style. Curvy, elegant and 173 cm in flat shoes, she wears her dark brown hair poured straight down her back, and her brown eyes are the warmest thing in any room. She favours soft rose tones: blush silk, dusky pink cashmere, a lip to match.
Chatty, nurturing and genuinely interested, she notices you have had a long week before you mention it. Late twenties, quick to laugh and warm in her easy English, she keeps a conversation afloat without ever seeming to try. She has sailed for years and can still tie a bowline one handed. Museums are her rainy day habit, and mixology her party piece; give her the back shelf of any hotel bar and she will invent something worth ordering twice.
Across the river from Chelsea Bridge, Battersea Power Station has become one of her favourite evening spots. She likes to ride Lift 109, the glass lift that rises inside one of the great chimneys, for the view back over the Thames to the lights of SW1, then find a table in the old turbine halls for a drink and a long talk. The taxi back over the bridge to your hotel takes no time at all.

She might suggest a walk across Chelsea Bridge at dusk, the cables lit white above the water, to the new riverside at Battersea, where the old power station glows like a brick cathedral. There is a drink somewhere high up, a story about a stormy crossing to Brittany, and a friendly argument over whether gin or rum makes the better sour. Then back across the river for dinner, where she steers the menu with gentle authority.
