Laura, as Rosie knows her
Rotten Row at seven in the morning is the one appointment Laura never misses. She rides whenever she can, and it shows in the way she carries herself: straight backed and athletic at 169 cm, the long hair a light brown that the summer has streaked paler, the eyes green and forever scanning for the next adventure. By evening the boots give way to a floaty dress and flat sandals, and she looks like the best guest at a garden party.
Warmth is her default setting. Laura is in her mid twenties, full of energy, with a laugh that carries pleasantly across a room. She speaks English in a lively, open way and asks about your travels before telling you about hers, which involve a great deal of skiing, a great many Italian trains and one memorable night in a mountain hut. She is adventurous in the most charming sense: willing to try the unfamiliar dish, the unmarked bar, the longer route home.
Her favourite Belgravia evening starts at The Grenadier on Wilton Row, the little pub tucked into a cobbled mews where the Duke of Wellington's officers are said to have drunk. She loves the story, the sentry box by the door and the snug inside, and she has a gift for finding a table when the place looks full. From there the grand hotels at Hyde Park Corner are a few minutes' stroll.

How Laura likes an evening to go
Laura likes an evening that keeps moving. She might meet you at Hyde Park Corner for a brisk walk under the plane trees while the sky turns pink over Knightsbridge, describing the horse she rode that morning and the one that threw her last spring. Then the cobbles of Wilton Row, a seat in the snug and a glass of something Italian or a proper pint, depending on her mood. She is a natural storyteller, and her tale of a missed train in the Dolomites improves with every telling. Supper happens wherever the conversation leads. Later, sandals abandoned by the door, she tucks herself into one end of the sofa and asks to hear about the most adventurous thing you have ever done.

Skiing, first lift up and last lift down. The long lunch is for people who did not get enough fresh air, though I will happily join them later.
