Samanta, as Rosie knows her
Samanta practises the violin every morning, scales first and then whichever piece is currently defeating her. By evening the discipline has become poise. Slim and 174 cm, her dark brown mane brushed long and sleek, she has brown eyes that give little away at first and a great deal later. Her style is noir glamour: black, beautifully cut, a red lip and nothing else to distract.
People notice Samanta without quite knowing why. Elegant, composed and quietly magnetic, now in her late twenties, she draws attention without ever seeking it. Her English is graceful and measured, and there is always a new grammar book in her bag, because she loves the way other languages shape an idea. Design hotels are a particular fondness; she can tell you who made a lobby chair, why the lighting works and which rooms have the best view.
In SW1, her ideal evening begins at Cadogan Hall on Sloane Terrace, the converted church where chamber music sounds rich and close. She will choose a string quartet or a violin recital, listen with total concentration, and then explain over a late supper exactly why the second movement moved her. Samanta's evenings unfold like chamber music: a quiet opening, a middle full of conversation and a close that lingers. She likes to meet in a hotel lobby she admires, and will tell you what makes it work, from the marble to the angle of the lamps. Then a concert, if there is one worth hearing, and she sits very still, completely absorbed, before turning to you at the interval with an unexpectedly funny remark about the cellist's shoes. Supper is late and elegant. She talks about the language she is learning, the words that have no translation, and the hotels she dreams of visiting. As the night goes on her composure warms, and her laugh, rare and low, is well worth waiting for.
